Cefalù is a medieval town pressed against a rock, with an Arab-Norman cathedral on the UNESCO list and a beach that begins where the lanes end. Our home here is in Mazzaforno, just outside the centre, with private access to the sea.

The old town and the Rocca
The Norman cathedral and its mosaics, the medieval washhouse, Porta Pescara and the lanes running down to the water take half a day on foot. The path up the Rocca asks for an hour of climbing and returns the view that ends up on every Sicilian postcard.
Beaches beyond the main one
The historic beach in front of the old town is the most photographed and, in August, the most crowded. Along the coast lie Mazzaforno, Santa Lucia, Caldura and Settefrati: clearer water, fewer people, and no queue for a sunbed.
A base for the Madonie
The Madonie park begins behind Cefalù: mountain villages, trails and a cuisine entirely different from the coast. That is why the area works out of season too, when the sea is not the reason for the trip.

Anyone whose main plan is the sea, with a walkable town for the evening. Groups and families who prefer a villa to an apartment. Anyone who wants to alternate beach and mountains. If you only have a few days and mostly want Palermo, sleeping in the city is quicker.

Is Mazzaforno far from the centre of Cefalù?
No, it is a hamlet just outside town on the same coast. The advantage is sea access without the crowds of the historic beach, while staying a short distance from the cathedral and the restaurants.
When is the best time to visit Cefalù?
The swimming season runs from May to October. Spring and autumn remain excellent for the town and the Madonie, with better walking temperatures and far fewer people in the lanes.
Do I need a car in Cefalù?
Not for the old town, which is walkable. For the beaches outside the centre and the Madonie villages, yes — a car makes the stay much freer.
