Western Sicily is the island's least-told chapter — yet it holds three places that are difficult to forget. Segesta: a 5th-century BC Doric temple standing alone in open countryside, never completed, never ransacked, intact. Erice: a medieval city perched at 750 metres on a mountain, with stone alleyways, Norman towers and Sicily's most celebrated pastries. The Trapani Salt Pans: stretches of pink salt with white windmills, flamingos in transit and a late-afternoon light that photographers chase from all over the world. An itinerary that moves through three thousand years of history without ever pausing for breath.
How it unfolds
Departure from Palermo
Pickup at your accommodation. Approximately one hour's transfer to Segesta on the A29 motorway.
Segesta
Visit to the 5th-century BC Doric temple and the Hellenistic theatre overlooking the valley. Your guide explains the Elymian civilisation — a pre-Greek culture of which Segesta is the only visible remains. Approximately 1h30 on site.
Transfer to Erice
Scenic ascent to Erice with views over the Gulf of Castellammare.
Erice
Walk through the medieval centre: the Castle of Venus, the Cyclopean walls, the Norman Mother Church, Piazza Umberto I. Stop at Maria Grammatico for almond pastries — one of Sicily's most celebrated pastry workshops. Free time for lunch (we recommend a local trattoria included in the agreed itinerary).
Transfer to the Trapani Salt Pans
Approximately 30 minutes' descent to the coast.
Trapani Salt Pans and Salt Museum
Visit to the Nubia salt pans: pink salt basins, white windmills, flamingos in summer. A visit to the Museo del Sale to understand the history of this ancient production.
Return to Palermo
Arrival at your accommodation between 17:00 and 17:15.

What to know
- Is Erice open in winter?
- Yes, Erice is open year-round. In winter it can be wrapped in mist — an atmosphere many find even more evocative. Bring a layer even in summer: at 750 metres it's always cooler than Palermo.
- Are flamingos at the salt pans year-round?
- Flamingos are present mainly from March to October, peaking in spring. In winter the salt pans are still very beautiful for the light and the windmills.
- Is the tour suitable for children?
- Suitable for children aged 10 and over. The Segesta paths require some walking on uneven ground.
- Can the itinerary be modified?
